Volunteer Assignments

We've listed some of the ways you can volunteer below. However, if you have special skills to offer, please call us so we can discuss how you can best use your talents to help our patients.

Cooper Drive Division 
  • Patient Transport- Work out of dispatch room to respond to push patients in wheelchairs/stretchers to and from medical appointments within the medical center at Cooper Drive.
  • Volunteer Transportation Network- drive donated vans to transport veterans from the Lexington area without transportation to and from the medical center to attend scheduled appointments.
  • Surgical Waiting Room- provide support to families waiting for veterans having surgery.
  • Inpatient Nursing Units- assist nursing staff; visit patients; fill water pitchers; pass out personal hygiene items; escort patients off the unit, etc.
  • Reminder Calls- call veterans with appointments in specialty clinics to confirm they will be able to attend their appointment.
  • Information Desks- assist veterans and visitors in locating areas within the medical center.
  • Office Support- provide administrative support in office areas through answering phones, filing, picking up mail, etc.
  • Voter Registration Volunteer- Providing non-partisan information to inpatients who are interested in registering to vote or voting by absentee ballot.
  • Comment Card Assistant – collect comment cards from patients throughout the medical center and input comments on a computer spreadsheet
Leestown Road Division  
  • Inpatient Nursing Units- assist nursing staff; visit patients; fill water pitchers; pass out personal hygiene items; escort patients off the unit, etc.
  • Reminder Calls- call veterans with appointments in specialty clinics to confirm they will be able to attend their appointment.
  • Information Desks- assist veterans and visitors in locating areas within the medical center.
  • Office Support- provide administrative support in office areas through answering phones, filing, picking up mail, etc.
  • Special Recreation Activities- organizations and groups can sponsor special recreation activities for patients on one or more inpatient units, such as bingo, musical entertainment, monthly birthday parties, pizza parties, picnics, etc.
  • Voter Registration Volunteer- Providing non-partisan information to inpatients who are interested in registering to vote or voting by absentee ballot.
Community-Based Volunteer Assignments with VA  
  • Camp Nelson National Veterans Cemetery – provide administrative support to the cemetery office and occasional gardening
  • Veterans History Project – conduct video or audio interviews of military veterans who served during periods of war or conflict with completed interviews submitted to the National Library of Congress
  • Thomson-Hood State Veterans Center in Wilmore – provide assistance to residents and/or staff in various administrative or clinical areas
  • Home Respite Care –  companionship type volunteer assistance to veterans receiving VA care in their home to provide a “break” to the primary caregiver.
